A smart and sustainable plan for saving energy.Our energy demands are outpacing generation. The cost of electricity continues to rise. Urbanization is a worldwide movement. Yet in some places, taxpayers pay $1 billion annually to operate and maintain peaker plants that supply energy during only the highest demand periods — just a few hours a year. There has to be a smarter solution. Better managing the energy we have today is the most economical, available, and immediate form of alternative fuel. We believe that smart device networks that save energy transparently — without affecting our daily lives — are the best way to manage and control energy use. This is more than a vision, however: It's reality. It's at work in the streetlights of Oslo, Norway; in homes in Italy; and in buildings all over the world. Almost every application in a smart city can be used, or is already in use, to increase energy efficiency and decrease operating costs. Managing Energy Around the WorldEchelon's networking technology forms the underpinnings for an advanced metering infrastructure that serves over 27 million homes in Italy. Our NES System for smart metering was developed using the expertise we gained from that project and from our strategic acquisitions. Today, more than 1.5 million homes around the world are slated to enjoy the benefits of the smart grid with the NES System. Our LonWorks platform is the underlying control technology in hundreds of thousands of commercial buildings worldwide. Most save at least 20 percent of their energy use, as a result. Our technology also controls China's high-speed trains and New York City’s public schools, and even keeps babies safe in over 900 maternity wards. In addition, LonWorks technology will make Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium at the 2008 Olympics more energy-efficient. Even solar, wind, hydro, and other clean energy sources can be operated and managed more efficiently through the use of LonWorks networks. Our power line smart transceivers and i.LON Internet servers are the core of Oslo, Norway's managed street lighting system, which has reduced the city’s lighting energy use by 62 percent. Our i.LON Internet servers are the key to peaking utilities — virtual utilities that ensure that when the electricity grid is nearing capacity, megawatts of energy are available, negating the need to fire up inefficient, pollution-causing backup electricity plants. Our Digital Home® Alliance has over 35 member companies devoted to making home control finally valuable and viable to consumers.
