The Challenge
Lisbon’s D. João de Castro Secondary School, a four-story facility that covers 25,700 square feet, was chosen by the Portuguese Ministry of Education to undergo a building upgrade. The goal was to update the school’s aging infrastructure, adding ways to reduce energy use, streamline operations, and shrink its carbon footprint.
The Solution
A new building automation system, based on LonWorks technology, gives the school a single point of control for lighting, heating, and cooling, and makes it possible to automate operations for maximum efficiency. As an added benefit, the building itself is now a teaching aid, giving students real-life experience with best practices in energy efficiency and sustainability.
Key Benefits
- HVAC and lighting systems are using 15% less energy.
- Solar panels reduce boiler use by 10%.
- Reduced cabling requirements lowered installation costs by 20%.
